Bug Day
August 3, Sunday, Noon - 4 p.m.
Do you know that bugs can be fun? Don't miss this festive event devoted to insects and their relatives. Play bug games, race wax worms, hunt for bugs, view bugs through microscopes, learn about bees, and earn a "Master of Bugology" degree. Call Ford Nature Center for details. Held at MetroParks Farm.



SUMMER EVENINGS AT FELLOWS RIVERSIDE GARDENS
The D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center is open to visitors on Wednesday evenings until 8 p.m. The Antonucci Library and Shop in the Gardens has extended hours. The Cafe is open until 7 p.m. for your enjoyment of summer evenings at the Gardens.

Guided Tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens
August 10, Sunday, 2 - 3:30 p.m.
Enjoy a leisurely walk in Fellows Riverside Gardens to admire the vibrant hues of bedding plants displaying their summer colors. A guide will point out highlights while sharing anecdotes and history. Sign in at the information desk on the afternoon of the tour.

Botanical Pottery: Orchid Pot
August 13, Wednesday, 5:30 - 8 p.m.
Lynn Cardwell will teach students to construct a planter suitable for growing orchids. The pottery will be glazed, fired, and ready for pickup approximately three weeks after the class. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Breakfast Botany: Mint
August 15, Friday, 8:30 - 10 a.m.
Start your morning with a brisk walk through the Gardens. Return to the Garden Cafe to enjoy a light breakfast and learn about the ornamental and flavorful mint family. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

The Culinary Garden: Garden to Table

Relax in the Beeghly Terrace while Victor and Heidi Suraci prepare a delicious vegetarian dinner. Learn the benefits of cooking with fresh local produce and take home the recipes. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

T'ai Chi in the Gardens

Mini Ag Camp
August 1, Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
For children entering grades 4 - 6. Kids will enjoy this one-day camp that focuses on agriculture. A family picnic is scheduled at the end of the day. Call MetroParks Farm for a registration form.

Preschool Nature Hour: Gliding Along Glacier

Friday 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. or Saturday, 10 a.m.

Preschoolers ages 3 - 5 and their parents are invited to explore Lake Glacier. Fun activities include a ride on the Glacier Passenger Boat and a very "fishy" craft. Pre-register at Ford Nature Center.

Family Garden Day
August 10, Sunday, 1 - 4 p.m.
Fellows Riverside Gardens invites children with their families to an afternoon of fun and activities in the Family Garden. Pot a plant to take home, design in the digging garden, weave plants, listen to a story with puppets, snack on butterfly cookies and nectar, and leave your handprints on the garden fence.

Tales for Twos: Dragonfly, Dragonfly!

Oh, those magical dragonflies! We see them everywhere this time of year. Two-year-olds and their adult friends will learn about these masters of the air through story-telling, dramatic play, and outdoor exploration. Call Ford Nature Center to register.

Community Day & Concert

Strollin' & Cruisin'
August 10, Sunday, 11 a.m.
We'll stroll down to Lake Glacier Boathouse to board the brand new Passenger Boat. Relax while you learn about the natural and cultural history of this area as we cruise the lake, then return on foot. Seating is limited. Call Ford Nature Center by August 9 to reserve your seat. Meet at Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens. Moderate difficultly due to hills, 1 mile.

Ferns: No Flowers, Still Beautiful
August 17, Sunday, 2 p.m.
YSU graduate Brandon Sinn will lead this leisurely introduction to fern identification. Brandon will also compare the species collected generations ago by the first park naturalist, Ernest Vickers, to the species we find today. Meet at Lanterman's Mill parking lot. Moderate difficulty, 2 miles.

Climate Change and Ohio: A Serious Look at a Serious Issue
August 24, Sunday, 1 p.m.
Delve into the science, speculation, and substance of climate change in Ohio. Join us for a presentation followed by an interpretive hike to discuss possible changes in the natural world. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Easy rating, 1 mile.

Hopewell Hike
August 31, Sunday, 2 p.m.
Two hundred years ago the Hopewell Furnace cast its final iron. Enjoy a hike to this historic landmark. Meet at Yellow Creek Park Lodge. Moderate difficulty due to creek crossings, 3 miles.

Kayakers of all skill levels are invited to join these escorted trips. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Age restrictions apply. Participants will be required to complete a waiver. Reservations must be made 36 hours prior to program. Call Ford Nature Center for information.

"Kricket" Kayak

Maize Moon

Mahoning River Kayak

We'll paddle up the Mahoning and explore a lovely tributary named Eagle Creek. Restrictions apply. Meet at Trumbull County Metroparks' Canoe City Park. Call Ford Nature Center for details and directions.

Wildlife of Newport

Join us to discuss unique critters that inhabit the Lake Newport environs. Learn about their diets, homes, and day-to-day activities. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.

Cotton Candy Kayak
August 30, Saturday, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
You don't need to go to the Fair for cotton candy this Labor Day weekend. Join us on this kayak excursion through Newport Wetlands and paddle under what we hope will be a brilliant blue sky filled with cotton candy clouds. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.



BOATING

Boat Rides Into Nature
August 7 through August 28
Thursdays, 2 - 3 p.m.

The Lake Glacier Passenger Boat has returned! Every Thursday, beginning August 7 and continuing through August 28, a naturalist will accompany the Passenger Boat on three 20-minute tours of Lake Glacier. Register for a tour by calling Ford Nature Center beginning at 9 a.m. on the Monday before you wish to attend. Not for organized groups. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse.



GOLF

Mill Creek Pro-Am
August 13, Wednesday, 1 p.m. shotgun start
Join the top NOPGA Golf Professionals in a full day of fun at Mill Creek Golf Course and the Davis Center. Fee includes golf, lunch, prizes, cocktails, and dinner. Call the Pro Shop to register.

After Hours Tournament

Blooms of Summer

The large, floral watercolor paintings by San Francisco artist Gary Bukovnik fill the gallery walls with an explosion of joyful, colorful blooms.

John Paolano--Landscape Architect
Through December 2008, Melnick Museum
The design influences of John Paolano, landscape architect of Fellows Riverside Gardens, have been admired for 50 years. This exhibit honors his remarkable talents.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Sunset at the Farm
September 13, Saturday, 5 - 8 p.m.
Don't miss this family fall celebration at the MetroParks Farm. Horse-drawn wagon rides will be given throughout the evening. You can taste homemade apple butter and cider, experience up-close visits with farm animals, roast marshmallows at the campfire, search for candy and toys in a haystack, find your way through a corn maze, and participate in an egg toss and sack race competition. Be sure to see the room-sized train display presented by the Western Reserve Modular Railroad Club. Bring lawn chairs or blanket to sit on and enjoy the evening entertainment with folk singer Jon Mosey.

Fall Into Fun--A Family Festival
September 27, Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Families and friends are invited to share a day of fun celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Stroll though the garden marketplace to purchase food from vendors, crafts from local artists, mums, bulbs and other plants. Admire autumn displays throughout the Gardens, have your questions answered by gardening experts, enjoy entertainment, and participate in activities for all ages. Getting to Know the Wildflowers III

The design influences of John Paolano, landscape architect of Fellows Riverside Gardens, have been appreciated and admired for 50 years. This exhibit honors his remarkable talents.
